All The New Movies Coming to Streaming This Week

February is here, and while many folks will be gathering around their TVs to tune in to watch the Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, there will also be plenty of movies available on streaming to watch while you wait for the big game to start. From titles such as Cord Jefferson‘s Oscar-nominated dramedy American Fiction to the Disney+-premiere of The Marvels, there’s something for everyone coming to streaming in the first full week of February.

‘American Fiction’

Release Date: Tuesday, February 6

Nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, American Fiction is Cord Jefferson’s crowd-pleasing directorial debut that is equal parts hilarious, heartbreaking, and heartwarming. Based on the novel Erasure by Percival Everett, the dramedy follows Monk Ellison (Jeffrey Wright), a highly skilled author and professor who is placed on temporary leave after making a liberal white student feel uncomfortable during a lecture on racism. While attending a literary seminar, Monk learns about another black author on the rise in the literary world, Sintara Golden (Issa Rae), whose bestselling novel “We’s Lives in Da Ghetto” is receiving unanimous praise from the liberal elite but also is perpetuating negative black stereotypes. Amidst his frustration with the success of the novel and an unexpected family emergency, Monk drunkenly writes a satire titled ‘My Pafology,” which mocks all the racial clichés that have been celebrated by the media. Much to his shock and initial dismay, the book becomes a sensation in the publishing world, with people taking the book seriously instead of ironically. Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us) co-stars in the movie as Monk’s brother Cliff, a role that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The rest of the cast includes Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish), John Ortiz (Silver Linings Playbook), Erika Alexander (Living Single), Leslie Uggams (Deadpool), Adam Brody (The O.C.), and Keith David (The Thing).

‘Float’

Release Date: Friday, February 9

Available just in time for Valentine’s Day is the new swoon-worthy flick Float, starring Andrea Bang (Kim’s Convenience) and Robbie Amell (Upload). Bang stars as Waverly, a med school graduate who is looking for time to lie low before her residency in Toronto. While taking a detour in a small Canadian town, Blake (Amell), a local lifeguard, saves her from nearly drowning and offers to teach her how to swim. A romance begins to blossom between the pair, causing Waverly to begin to reconsider whether she wants to abandon her plans in Toronto to be with Blake or just leave this relationship as a simple summer fling. Michelle Krusiec (Hollywood), Andrew Bachelor (The Babysitter), Rukiya Bernard (Yellowjackets), and Sarah Desjardins (The Night Agent), co-star in the romance directed by Sherren Lee.

‘I.S.S.’

Release Date: Tuesday, February 6

Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) headlines the tense space thriller I.S.S. which hails from acclaimed filmmaker Gabriela Cowperthwaite (Blackfish). Set on board the International Space Station, the film follows a team of U.S. and Russian astronauts who receive ground orders from their respective countries to take control of the station by any means necessary, after a deadly conflict breaks out on Earth. As the tensions continue to rise to drastic levels, the trust between the astronauts continues to break down. Chris Messina (Argo), John Gallagher Jr. (10 Cloverfield Lane), Masha Mashkova (For All Mankind), Costa Ronin (The Americans), and Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones) co-star in the movie.

‘Marmalade’

Release Date: Friday, February 9

Stranger Things‘ Joe Keery stars as Baron, a lovelorn convict with good intentions, in the dark romantic crime comedy Marmalade, which is the directorial debut of Keir O’Donnell (Wedding Crashers). The film begins with Baron in prison plotting an escape while reminiscing to his cellmate Otis (Aldis Hodge), about his relationship with Marmalade (Camila Morrone), and their doomed bank robbery that landed him behind bars. Baron reveals that he comes from poverty, and has been struggling to hold a job while caring for his ailing mother, which is what initially led him into a life of crime. Wayne Duvall (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) co-stars in the movie, which balances laughs with thrills.

‘The Marvels’

Release Date: Wednesday, February 7

The latest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes its Disney+ debut this week. Nia DaCosta‘s The Marvels serves as a sequel to the mega-successful Captain Marvel, as well as a follow-up to the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel and WandaVision. The film finds Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) getting her powers entangled with her estranged niece Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and her biggest fan Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) after a Kree revolutionary (Zawe Ashton) gets a hold of a powerful artifact. The three heroines must team up to save the universe and get their powers back in an adventure full of cats, musical numbers, and power-swapping. Samuel L. Jackson once again reprises his role as Nick Fury alongside a supporting cast that also includes Gary Lewis (Billy Elliot), Park Seo-joon (Parasite), and Ms. Marvel stars Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, and Saagar Shaikh.

‘Upgraded’

Release Date: Friday, February 9

Camila Mendes (Riverdale), Archie Renaux (Shadow & Bone), and Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny) star in the romantic comedy Upgraded, directed by Carlson Young (Scream: The TV Series). Mendes plays Ana, an ambitious young woman who dreams of having a successful career in the art world as well as to impress her domineering boss Claire (Tomei). When Ana is unexpectedly upgraded to first class on a work trip, she meets Will (Renaux), who believes Ana is actually her boss. As the two begin to fall in love, Ana realizes that this seemingly fresh start will inevitably come crashing down when the truth is unveiled. Academy Award nominee Lena Olin (Enemies, A Love Story), Thomas Krestchmann (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), Grégory Montel (Call My Agent!), Aimee Carrero (The Menu), Andrew Schulz (You People), Rachel Matthews (Happy Death Day), Fola Evans-Akingbola (The Night Agent), Anthony Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and Saoirse Monica-Jackson (Derry Girls) co-star in the romcom.

‘Cat Person’

Release Date: Friday, February 9

Based on Kristen Roupenian‘s popular 2017 short story, Susanna Fogel‘s Cat Person is an unusual psychological thriller that aspires to scrutinize modern dating. CODA‘s Emilia Jones stars as Margot, a college sophomore who works at a movie theater and begins dating Robert (Nicholas Braun), an older man and a frequent customer. While their relationship initially starts decent enough, albeit very awkward, things start to take a turn when Margot begins to have second thoughts and gradually becomes creeped out by Robert’s behavior, some of which she sees as childish. The cast of Cat Person also includes Geraldine Viswanathan (Blockers), Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet), Hope Davis (Your Honor), and Fred Melamed (Barry).

‘Suncoast’

Release Date: Friday, February 9

Suncoast is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age film by first-time director Laura Chinn. The Last of Us‘ Nico Parker stars as Doris, a teenager whose life is seemingly plagued by loss, after losing her father at a young age, and her deathly ill brother being put on life support in a facility in Pinellas Park, Florida. While her mother, Kristine (Laura Linney), spends all her time at the facility, Doris decides to try and live like a normal teenager. She hosts a party, tries to meet boys, and forms a friendship with an activist (Woody Harrelson). Keyla Monterroso Mejia (Freeridge), Scott MacArthur (The Righteous Gemstones), Amarr (Colin in Black & White), Ella Anderson (Henry Danger), Daniella Taylor (Grown-ish), and Matt Walsh (Ted) co-star in this tearjerker.

‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’

Release Date: Sunday, February 11 (through Paramount+ with Showtime)

Dracula has been making his cinematic comeback as of late, with Renfield, the upcoming Abigail, and the long-delayed The Last Voyage of the Demeter. André Øvredal (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) directs the film, which is based on the chapter “The Captain’s Log” from Bram Stoker‘s Dracula. The movie follows the crew of the merchant ship, the Demeter, whose already dangerous voyage becomes even more terrifying when Dracula (Javier Botet) sneaks on board. Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton), Aisling Franciosi (The Nightingale), David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad), Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones), and Woody Norman (C’mon C’mon) star in this fresh take on the classic vampire tale.
