A Cinderella Story costume designer addresses infamous plot hole of the Halloween party scene

It’s a movie beloved by generations, it’s almost a right of passage to watch it growing up.

But in order to love it as much as we do, we’ve collectively all chosen to ignore one minor plot hole.

Of course, we’re talking about the iconic 2004 movie A Cinderella Story starring none other than Hilary Duff. And the scene in question? Well, it’s obviously the infamous tiny mask scene.

It all happens toward the end of the movie when Hilary Duff’s character, Sam Montgomery, walks down the stairs of the Halloween party, wearing a huge white ballgown and a tiny white mask.

And while Duff’s face was mostly visible and she was definitely recognisable to most, her love interest of the film, Chad Michael Murray’s Austin Ames, simply didn’t recognise her.

Now finally, we have some answers thanks to the film’s costume designer, Denise Wingate.

Wingate spoke with People in celebration of the film’s 20th anniversary this month, and she touched on the behind the scenes thoughts that went into creating the scene.

“You had to be able to see her eyes, but not to be able to see her too much because the joke was for him to not know it was her,” she explained of her thought process when putting the look together.

But thankfully, we’re not going mad. Wingate agrees that Austin not recongising Sam in the scene may have been a minor plot hole.

”How does he not know?! Isn’t it obvious?!” she laughed.

Wingate says they made at least 15 different masks before settling on the one that made the cut.

She explained that it had to be small enough that she could see, but still cover enough of her face to create a bit of mystery.

“It’s a romantic scene, and you want to see her have this big moment,” Wingate said.

But thankfully, it all worked out (despite the minor plot hole previously discussed).

”The dress was perfect,” Wingate said. “Finding it was perfect, and it fit her perfect. It was literally the glass slipper.”
