Why did they cancel the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show?
Victoria’s Secret, the widely-known lingerie brand, introduced the first fashion show in 1995.
Over two decades, countless supermodels and celebrities (including Taylor Swift) walked the famed runway donning stunning ensembles and show-stopping angel wings. But in 2019, the show was axed.
The decision to can the show was confirmed by Stuart Burgdoefer, the CFO of Victoria’s Secret’s parent company L Brands, who cited that the official reason was to “evolve the marketing” of the lingerie brand, per Variety.

The decision came, however, amid the show’s poor ratings and a slew of controversies.
Variety reported in 2019 that the popular runway show, which aired as an hour-long television special on broadcast television, had declined significantly in ratings with the brand’s last show in 2018 pulling in ratings that were millions of viewers lower than previous years.
The show also received criticism after then chief marketing officer Ed Razek told Vogue in an interview that he didn’t believe transgender models had a place in the famous show and that there was no interest in plus-size models on the runway, sparking the conversation of the brand’s perceived lack of inclusivity.

After his remarks received wide scrutiny, Razek shared a statement apologising for his comments.
“My remark regarding the inclusion of transgender models in the Vitoria’s Secret Fashion Show came across as insensitive. I apologise,” he wrote.
The show was also embroiled in controversy when it came out that L Brands’ CEO Les Wexner had ties to the disgraced Jeffrey Epstein. Both Razek and Wexner have since stepped down from their roles with the company.
