American Comic Trailer: Patton Oswalt & Doug Benson Star in Mockumentary

ComingSoon is debuting an exclusive American Comic trailer for the upcoming mockumentary, which hails from stand-up comedian Joe Kwaczala. The movie will have its world premiere at the Dances With Films LA 2025 festival on June 29.

“The film is a verité-style mockumentary that follows two up-and-coming stand-up comedians, who, despite their superficial “cultural” differences, share remarkable similarities when it comes to egotism, self-destruction, and social ineptitude. As the film satirically pulls back the curtain on the unique subculture of stand-up comedy, self-absorbed competitiveness intensifies, leading to some shocking and unexpected revelations,” reads the official synopsis.

What happens in the American Comic trailer?

The video introduces Kwaczala as he plays two different characters, who are both up-and-coming stand-up comedians. The mockumentary will also star Hayley McFarland, Sam Wiles, John Eisenrich, Biniam Bizuneh, Doug Benson, Jon Gabrus, and Patton Oswalt.

American Comic is directed and produced by Daniel J. Clark from a screenplay written by Kwaczala. The movie was filmed in real comedy clubs with live audiences that didn’t realize was Kwaczala in character. The reactions from every show are genuine. It has a total runtime of 86 minutes.

“Joe and I didn’t wait for someone to give us the greenlight to make this film. We pooled our resources, called in every favor (from actors, comedians, venues, etc.) and set out with a script and a camera,” Clark said in a statement. “We filmed on-location in different parts of the country at real comedy shows in front of real, unsuspecting audiences. We took this approach because stand-up never feels quite right when portrayed on TV and in movies. So we would have Joe get on-stage in the middle of a normal comedy show, not tell anyone he was performing in-character, and capture the authentic reaction. It even surprised us how well it worked.”

He continued, “I’m extremely proud of American Comic. I’m excited to see how its message, characters, and jokes resonate with audiences, whether they’re insiders from the comedy world who find it all too familiar or outsiders curious to peek behind the curtain of this strange subculture.”
