Patients can now expect to endure an average stay of over seven hours in a hospital emergency department – which is one hour longer than a decade ago, new figures reveal.

The HSE measures patient experience time (PET), covering the entire visit from the point at which a person registers at the emergency department to when they get a bed or are discharged.
