Sutton Confronts Mom Reba, Talks Dad’s Suicide

Sutton is ready to take on heavy chapters of her past on this episode of  The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.  She opens up about her father’s suicide, visits her childhood home, and finally has that conversation she has been waiting to have with her tough-as-nails mother, Reba.  But not all conversations end on a positive note.  Bozoma and Erika feel that Dorit is heading towards divorce, despite the recent “friendly” conversation with PK

Reba is really showing her true colors right from the jump.  She bonds with Kyle over running and astrological signs, claiming she is not a nurturer. Kyle shares this tidbit with Sutton over glam and this in turn, opens up a barrel of emotions for Sutton.

Sutton realizes that her mom had a rough go, particularly when it came Sutton’s father and his issues.  He was hospitalized twice for chronic depression and he self-medicated with alcohol.  Her father never went to therapy and Sutton admits that his “non-treatment” was very disjointed. Sutton goes on to explain that in December of 2002, her dad shot himself.

In the meantime, Garcelle is getting to know Reba and is realizing that Sutton and Reba are rather similar in their behavior. Garcelle manages to steal away with Reba for a few minutes for some one on one time. Garcelle opens up about the intimate conversations she has had with Sutton and (bravely) tells Reba that Sutton wants her respect and approval.

Reba’s response is, “I don’t think that’s any of your business. You have no clue,” which translates to “mind your own damn business.” Garcelle admits that she doesn’t know the ins and outs of their relationship, but she is merely Sutton’s messenger. After chatting with Reba, it clicks for Garcelle.  She feels as though Reba may have been jealous of the relationship Sutton had with her father.  That could explain their dynamic somewhat.

Sutton talks about her growing up home and how she is planning on taking the ladies by to see it. She wants to revisit the memories there (most good, until the suicide), but Reba will not be joining them on this tour. Sutton admits that she may have some pent up resentment towards Reba because she was home the day her dad shot himself.  Sutton’s emotions flood out, sharing that her mother has never tried to deal with the situation.

Back in California, Erika proudly shows off her house facelift.  She is thrilled to know that now the energy is shifting to better things in her future.  After nearly five years of hell, Erika is excited about life again.

Speaking of life, Boz and her daughter sit down for a chat.  Boz discusses the topic of her boyfriend, who she has been dating for 8 months. Boz’s daughter approves of her boo and even gives the green light for Boz to have another baby.  As explained by Boz’s very mature kid, their relationship has evolved and so it may be time for Boz to share her love with a new little force also.

Visiting Sutton’s childhood home: the part of the trip no one is looking forward to because this was the last place Sutton saw her dad alive.  Sutton becomes crippled by memories that come flooding back to her as she enters the house (the current homeowners so graciously gave her the opportunity to have this healing journey).

Sutton is ready to say goodbye to her father.  She admits to being a daddy’s girl, helping in the kitchen.  When she winds up in the spot where she remember seeing her dad last alive, Sutton remembers how out of it he was. Sutton goes through the shouldha-wouldha-couldha of it all, which brings the ladies to tears. Sutton explains that her mom means a lot to her and things have not been right since her dad died, and so now may be the time to make things right between them.

Boz, Dorit, and Erika meet up for some drinks and pizza (not a pizza party, silly.  Erika already had one of those-finally). Boz spills that she talked about having a baby with her boyfriend, but has not yet said I love you.  Say, what? Erika is just as confused as we all are. Boz knows her boyfriend loves her, but Erika begs Boz not to ask him outright, as Dorit suggests.

Dorit changes the subject to…PK.  He called her and they started chatting like old pals, focusing on communication.  Dorit is trying to explain that this all for the kids. Boz feels like the positive conversation feels like a trick, but Dorit thinks otherwise. Erika believes that PK is ruthless because he is a ruthless businessperson and at the end of the day, a divorce is business.  Boz thinks that PK is trying to get the upper hand, calming her down so that he get what he wants.  Boz warns her that this is a game and Dorit needs to “wake up” before she becomes a victim.

Sutton has decided to make Kyle, Garcelle, and Reba some crab cakes, a nod to her late father and his recipe.  However, she is stressing, partly over the crab cakes and partly over the conversation she is planning on having with Reba. To start light, Sutton shows Reba her new capsule collection, something that she has worked really hard on. Reba has always been a career woman and Sutton is so proud of her, she just wishes the pride would be reciprocated. Reba likens Sutton’s products and where they are made to ground beef, not quite the response Sutton was hoping for…

Sutton comes right out and questions if her mother is proud of her or understands what she does.  Reba believes that she doesn’t need to say she is proud of Sutton, but maybe Sutton needs to hear that.  According to Reba, it seems “trite, inconsequential, and overused” to say I love you and I am proud of you.

Reba goes back to the way she was raised.  No one ever told her she was pretty growing up because that’s just the way it was. But Sutton points out that if it’s “trite” for her to do or say these things Sutton wants, she does not want to push Reba.  Sutton then discusses her upcoming fashion show and she invites Reba to the show. Reba agrees to this, and Sutton looks like she just won a million dollars.

She looks relieved to hear that her mom is agreeable to doing better, as a WE. They hug it out the best way Reba can and Kyle and Garcelle scatter after overhearing the conversation.  They are proud of Sutton for having this conversation and they TELL her this. Over some crab cakes, the ladies share big smiles and it seems like all is finally well in Augusta.
