7 Best Power Rangers Team-Ups We Can’t Believe Happened

Summary

  • Some Power Rangers team-ups break free from traditional tropes to deliver special moments.
  • For example, Cosmic Fury introduced the Dark Ranger after seven years in an unexpected crossover.
  • “Forever Red” remains an iconic Power Rangers crossover, delivering unexpected interactions between iconic characters from different eras.

Power Rangers has seen dozens of great crossovers, but some team-ups were much better than anyone could have expected. Crossovers are part of the identity of the Super Sentai and Power Rangers franchises, often leading to instant classic episodes about which viewers never forget. Power Rangers’ crossover episodes have their own set of rules, but some team-ups managed to break free of those tropes to deliver something truly special. The first proper crossover between two established Power Rangers teams happened in Zeo, whereas the most recent ones happened in Cosmic Fury.

Team-ups in Power Rangers can refer to crossovers featuring multiple characters, but they also include smaller interactions between at least two characters from different seasons. Smaller crossovers could sometimes be even more impactful than massive team-ups, especially when they involve characters audiences never thought would be on the same scene together. Additionally, some Power Rangers team-ups were easy to predict were going to happen, whereas others were incredibly surprising. Power Rangers has crossed over with different properties like Kamen Raider and TMNT, but those did not add much to the series and worked much better in other mediums like comics.

7 The Mighty Morphin Black Ranger Saves The In Space Black Ranger

Adam morphed again to help Carlos in “Always a Chance”

Carlos regained his confidence and joined the second MMPR Black Ranger in a fantastic team-up.

While Adam and Carlos had already interacted before – the latter replaced the former as the Turbo Green Ranger after all – their team-up in Power Rangersin Space was something special. The second generation of Turbo Rangers had barely any guidance from their veteran mentors and had to step up as a new team of heroes without any experience. By In Space, the Rangers of Earth were much better suited for the job than they were back in Turbo, but they were still quite young and had a lot to learn.

This is why having Adam showing up to guide his Power Rangers replacement was such a great moment. Carlos had failed in battle and caused Cassie to be hurt, leading the In Space Black Ranger to question himself every time he was on the battlefield. Because of his trauma, Carlos was about to give up being a Ranger. However, once Adam put his own life on the line to use a damaged Power Coin to morph and help in the battle, Carlos regained his confidence and joined the second MMPR Black Ranger for a fantastic team-up.

6 The Lost Galaxy & In Space Rangers Fight The Psycho Rangers

Lost Galaxy was Power Rangers’ first standalone season since MMPR

Lost Galaxy was the first Power Rangers show after the end of the Zordon Era, meaning it was supposed to be a standalone series with little to no connections to the previous one. This made Lost Galaxy’s crossover with In Space, the Zordon Era’s final season, even cooler. There was a feeling that In Space was passing the torch to Lost Galaxy and that Power Rangers was never going to be the same after that crossover. Team-up episodes continued happening, but the seasons never regained the same sense of continuity they had until the Zordon Era.

A crossover can only be good as its villains, and the Lost Galaxy/In Space team-up had some amazing ones. The Psycho Rangers, which are among the best Power Rangers villains in the history of the franchise, returned from the dead again to seek revenge against the Rangers. This time, however, they had to go up against two teams. The Lost Galaxy/In Space crossover also tied into a major storyline involving Pyscho Pink that concluded with the death of Pink Ranger Kendrix. She would then be replaced by Karone, also known as Astronema from Power Rangers in Space.

5 Tommy Leads Legacy Rangers To Save The Multiverse In Super Ninja Steel

Tommy, Kat, Rocky, Wes, Trent, & more teamed up in “Dimensions in Danger”

“Dimensions in Danger” introduced the Master Morpher and featured all of Tommy’s previous Ranger forms except for Turbo Red.

Tommy was front and center in hundreds of Power Rangers episodes, including some of the franchise’s best crossovers. Super Ninja Steel’s “Dimensions in Danger,” which was Jason David Frank’s final Power Rangers episode before the actor sadly passed away on November 19, 2022, brought together multiple legacy Rangers for a 22-minute adventure full of nostalgia. While shorter than the usual two-part team-up episodes, “Dimensions in Danger” had everything viewers could hope from a crossover, including some interactions many thought would never happen again in the Power Rangers universe.

For example, Time Force Red Ranger Wes hugging Tommy and referring to him as a friend was an amazing callback to Wild Force’s “Forever Red,” during which Wes and Tommy fight side by side for the first time. “Dimensions in Danger” also revisited classic MMPR characters like Rocky and Kat and even confirmed that the second Pink Ranger was now married to Tommy. A celebration of Tommy Oliver’s Power Rangers legacy, “Dimensions in Danger” introduced the Master Morpher and featured all of Tommy’s previous Ranger forms except for Turbo Red.

4 Ninja Storm & Dino Thunder Fight Each Other (Them Team Up)

Two similar but different Power Rangers seasons once clashed

Ninja Storm marked the beginning of a new era for Power Rangers now under Disney. It was the first Power Rangers season to be filmed in New Zealand, and the goal was for each series to tell a standalone story. Ninja Storm made no references to previous seasons and did not include a crossover episode, breaking a tradition that had been going on since In Space. This is why it was so important to have a Ninja Storm and Dino Thunder crossover when the latter came out, and the result could not have been better.

“Thunder Storm” followed the oldest superhero crossover trope by having the Ninja Storm and Dino Thunder Rangers fight each other before they could work together. The Ninja Storm Rangers were brainwashed by the villain and forced into attacking the Dino Thunder crew, resulting in an amazing battle between them. They would later fight side by side in a great sequence that included a historical Power Rangers morphing call featuring five different battle cries across all ten Rangers. Ninja Storm and Dino Thunder shared many similarities, which is why this crossover was so great.

3 Dark Ranger Heckyl Assists The Cosmic Fury Rangers Against Lord Zedd

Heckyl finally became a Power Ranger (just not in Dino Charge)

Seeing Heckyl back in
Power Rangers
after seven years was great by itself, but the fact it happened in
Cosmic Fury
made it even better.

Dino Charge’s Heckyl went from a tragic villain into a hero and had a classic Power Rangers redemption arc. The only thing missing from the character’s journey was having him become a Power Ranger, namely the Dark Ranger based on Super Sentai’s Deathryuger. Dino Charge could not use the Dark Ranger’s design when it originally aired most likely due to contract issues. Fortunately, Heckyl’s Ranger form finally debuted seven years later in Cosmic Fury, resulting in an unexpected but welcome crossover. The Dark Ranger traveled between universes to help Earth during Bajillia Nairei’s attack.

Seeing Heckyl back in Power Rangers after seven years was great by itself, but the fact it happened in Cosmic Fury made it even better because Dino Fury never had a proper crossover episode. Additionally, seeing the Dark Ranger in a Power Rangers TV show after so much speculation on whether Heckyl would ever become a Ranger in Dino Charge added to the impact of his cameo. Of all the legacy cameos Cosmic Fury could have chosen, Dark Ranger Heckyl was not on top of the most likely ones, and that is what made it perfect.

2 The Original Blue Ranger Mentors The Cosmic Fury Power Rangers

Billy created the Cosmic Morphers and mentored the Dino Fury crew

As Power Rangers’ 30th season, Cosmic Fury needed to be more than just another show. With just 10 episodes and promising a unique season with no filler, Cosmic Fury had the difficult mission of wrapping up a year that began with the Power Rangers: Once & Always reunion on Netflix. Fortunately, Cosmic Fury lived up to the expectations, and while it had some flaws, it was full of nostalgic moments that brought Power Rangers full circle. This includes the return of David Yost to the show after almost 30 years since Billy’s final appearance in Zeo.

Yost’s Billy was not just a cameo for a one-of crossover – the original Blue Ranger was a regular character and appeared in every episode of the show. Billy was not just a mentor either, as he morphed into the iconic MMPR Blue Ranger form a few times to help the Cosmic Fury crew. Proving once again he is the most brilliant mind in the Power Ranger universe, Billy created the Cosmic Morphers and helped the Rangers get new powers. He also participated in Power Rangers Cosmic Fury’s final fight.

1 The Veteran Red Rangers Assemble In Forever Red

Power Rangers’ 10th anniversary was an instant classic

“Forever Red” became more than just a crossover and is considered a
Power Rangers
classic.

Two decades later, Powe Rangers’ “Forever Red” remains the franchise’s best team-up episode by a large margin. “Forever Red” was not only a fantastic crossover that delivered one great moment after the other, but it was also a relatively unexpected team-up full of interactions viewers never thought they were going to get. The Zordon Era had long ended at that point, meaning all the seasons were now standalone stories with little to no connection to the previous ones. In other words, Tommy had never been on the same scene as Andros, just like Carter Grayson had never interacted with T.J.

Some of the interactions featured in “Forever Red,” such as Andros and Tommy briefing a team full of Red Rangers about Zeo’s Machine Empire and Lord Zed’s Serpentera, included more attention to continuity than most seasons ever had. The Power Rangers chronology can be quite confusing and full of mistakes, but “Forever Red” treated the saga as one cohesive story. Each Red Ranger was written like they used to be in their respective shows, which is also something Power Rangers team-up episodes rarely nail. “Forever Red” became more than just a crossover and is considered a Power Rangers classic.
